Helicopter

Flight-seeing is one of the most popular and inspiring tours in Denali and there are a large number of providers offering varying options and prices.  It’s a big investment so we want to offer you as many choices as possible. We offer these options so you can choose one that is precisely what you personally will enjoy the most.  Don't be overwhelmed, we are happy to explain the differences, and give you the best deal there is.

To make it easier consider this:

Options 7 and 8 are on Helicopters the rest are on airplanes.
Option 8 is a Helicopter trip that includes a stop for a 3.5-hour guided hike.
Option 4 lands on a glacier. Options 7, 9 and 10 include that as an option.
Options 1, 9, 10 and 11 are flights you can take on your way from Anchorage to Denali.
Option 1 can be taken on your way up or after you arrive as it is close by.
Options 1, 2, 3B, 9, 10 and 11 are the most economical.
Options 1, 2, 3B, 4, 7B, 8, and 9B have been voted as a favorite by past staff members.

Got all that? Below you find as much information as we can provide, but we still welcome any questions you may have and are happy to help you make a choice. And don't forget, it is ALWAYS cheaper to purchase your tours from your friends at Denali Mountain Morning Hostel!

Here is a list of the options with a short description. Click on the Option Number for a detailed description.

Option 1. Airplane Tour departing from the town of Cantwell. They book by the flight instead of by the passenger which can save you a lot if you are a group of 2 or 3. Great tour to do on your way to Denali from Anchorage or after you get here. A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 2. This tour is a Fly/Bus trip. You fly from the Park Entrance to the end of the Park Road (90 Miles) and you return on a Park Shuttle. A great way to combine a flight and a bus trip. You have an option to add a fly-by of Denali Mountain. A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 3. Another airplane flight. This one departs from a private airstrip only 5 miles from the Hostel. They use larger multi-engine airplanes. You have an option to have a slightly shortened flight time with a lower price which is A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 4. This is an airplane flight that departs from the Healy Airstrip which is about 14 miles north of the Park Entrance, but includes courtesy pickup and return. This flight lands on a glacier and is fantastic. A STAFF FAVORITE.

Option 5. This is airplane flight is from the same company as the Fly/Bus trip, but on this tour instead of leaving you at the end of the Park Road to take a Park Shuttle, they fly you back to the Park Entrance were you started. And you also have the the option to fly by Denali Mountain.

Option 6. This airplane flight departs from the Healy Airstrip 14 miles north of the Park Entrance. It is on a larger multi-engine airplane which will take you up as high as the peaks of Denali Mountain as it circles the mountain. Courtesy pickup and return is available.
Option 7. This option is a helicopter flight. While similar in many ways to the airplane tours, it adds that special experience of flying in a helicopter. There is an option with this to also land on a glacier! It's a very popular tour and when including the glacier landing it's A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 8. Another helicopter option. Heli-hiking. A very unique tour. You not only get to flight-see (although short) and experience flight in a helicopter, you and a naturalist guide fly to a beautiful location east of the Park, land, go on a hike, and fly back. A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 9. This airplane flight originates in the town of Talkeetna which is about half-way between Anchorage and Denali. Talkeetna flights are cheaper and this one circumnavigates Denali Mountain and you have the option of a glacier landing which is A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 10. Another airplane flight out of Talkeetna. This one doesn't fully circle the mountain, but you do still have an optional glacier landing. This tour is one of the most economical and if you include the glacier landing it's A STAFF FAVORITE.
Option 11. Last but not least is this Talkeetna originating flight. This one is similar to Option 6. It is a multi-engine airplane that will get you up to the same height as the top of Denali Mountain for incredible views and is a little cheaper than flying out of Denali.

OPTION #1: Ray Atkins     ** BEST LOCAL DEAL** ** STAFF FAVORITE**

What will I see?: Fly with a long-time Alaskan, Ray Atkins! The flight circles Denali, or Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, and is a breathtaking way to see the area.

Duration: Ray gives you a 'baker's hour' tour of the mountain. (That means a bit more than an hour for you who never baked.)

Flight Times: With Ray, you book the plane, not just a seat. Therefore, the flight time is up to you as long as he isn't flying someone else.

Departs From: Ray’s place is 14 miles south of the hostel in the village of Cantwell. Courtesy Transportation is NOT offered, so it is necessary to have your own vehicle to get there. Alternatively you can book a private shuttle run from us, or sometimes it's possible to hook-up with other guests who have a car and share a ride and perhaps share the flight costs as well.

*Ray is not generally available for flight-seeing trips after August 8 due to hunting-season obligations.

Price: The flight is $360 for a private flight for one person or $450 for a flight for up to 3 passengers.

It is charged by the flight, not per individual person. Sorry, we can't discount this price. THIS IS THE BEST DEAL IN DENALI! If there aren't exactly 3 of you, we'll be happy to help you advertise for additional flyers, just let us know.

Cancellations: The weather doesn't always cooperate. Therefore, they do offer refunds the day of the flight for weather problems or if for any reason the flight can't occur. Otherwise, a 48 hour notice is required to get a refund. Additionally, Denali Mountain Morning Hostel charges $10 or 10%, whichever is greater, on all customer-initiated cancellations.

All tours promoted by Denali Mountain Morning Hostel & Lodge are provided by other companies. The hostel does not accept any liability to anyone regarding what occurs during, before, or after, the tour. We only guarantee the provider will be paid on your behalf and that we have represented the tour operator's offers to the best of our ability, based on the information they have provided to us.
Prices are subject to change.

OPTION #2A: Denali Park Day Excursion Fly/Bus Option ** STAFF FAVORITE**

What will I see?: This tour is very unique. Nearly all visitors to Denali take one of the park buses into the park and we highly recommend it. We also recommend you take the bus in as far as possible. That increases the chances of seeing wildlife and the views of Denali are spectacular near the road's end at either Wonder Lake or Kantishna. The only drawback is that it takes sitting on a bus for 12 to 13 hours. That is why this tour is such a hit. You take a 35 or 55 minute flight to Kantishna and then a 5 to 6-hour bus ride back! You get your bus tour and flight-seeing done in one day which is like freeing up a day of your vacation to do more.

This tour is one of the best Alaska wilderness tours; it’s an excellent day-trip to experience Denali National Park from the air and the ground. This trip is a great value for the economical, independent traveler. The National Park Service operates multiple buses each day to and from Kantishna. This operator will fly you in to Kantishna and you ride the park shuttle bus back to the park entrance. This is an excellent option for Denali sightseeing in this beautiful, remote region of Denali National Park.

An option within this option: OPTION #2B Fly/Bus Day Excursion with Fly-By **STAFF FAVORITE**

What will I see?: This is Bill's Favorite! Instead of taking the most direct route, you can add the "Fly-By Option". It will add about 20 minutes to your flight and you will traverse the spine of the Alaskan Range to the base of Mt. McKinley (Denali)! View the highest vertical wall in the world as you fly-by the North Face of Denali. You will fly over 30-mile-long glaciers and see some of the most scenic areas of Denali National Park. Weather conditions will dictate exact routes each day.

Duration: This is a 35-minute direct flight through the park, with the option for an additional 20-minute “fly-by”.

Flight Times: Flight Time is normally 12:00 pm, but other times might be possible or you may even want to first bus in and then fly back. We will work with you and the operator to try to meet your desires, just tell us what you would like to do and we'll go to work on it.

Departs From: Near the Visitors Center, at the entrance to the park. OR, from Kantishna at the end of the park road.

Other important information: Bring water, lunch, a warm layer, and rain gear. There are NO services available in Kantishna. If you take the noon flight, you should arrive in Kantishna between 12:35 and 12:55 PM. Bus schedules can change, but according to the current schedule, there is a bus leaving Kantishna at 2:05 PM arriving at the Wilderness Access Center (WAC) at the park entrance at approximately 7:15 PM and another leaves at 2:15 PM arriving at the WAC at approximately 8:30 PM. The hostel shuttle picks up at the WAC at 9:30 PM. Courtesy Transportation is not offered, but you can get there by free shuttle, ask us.

Price: This provider bases their prices on the total number of guests flying (NOT just hostel guests flying). It's a bit complicated, but we work with you to get you through it. Here are the details:

As always, Your Discounted Price for booking though us is in this funky green color.
2* to 3 Passengers Direct Flight $245 ($230**) per person or $335 ($315) with Fly-By
4 to 5* Passengers Fly-by is included $245 ($230**)
*2 person minimum to fly. 5 person maximum per flight. That's counting your party, other hostel guests and guests from other hotels.
** We will collect the full $315 at the time of the reservation unless your party and the other reserved flyers numbers at least 4, or if you want only the direct flight. If after you pay the $315 and at the time of your flight there are at least 4 flyers, we will refund to you the full $85 difference.
The prices above include air and ground transportation and Denali National Park Entrance Pass. (If you already have a park pass, they will happily deduct this from your total.)

That's a lot of stuff I know, but trust us, it's a great trip and parts of your anatomy will be glad they weren't pressed against a school bus seat for 13 hours. Trust us on that too!

Cancellations: Cancellations prior to 30 days OR due to weather will receive full refund LESS THEIR $40.00 PROCESS FEE. (That's right, if you're weathered in they will offer you another flight time, but if that doesn't work for you they will still charge you that fee, so be forewarned.) Less than 30 days will be charged full amount. In addition, Denali Mountain Morning Hostel charges $10 or 10% (whichever is greater) on all customer-initiated cancellations.

All tours promoted by Denali Mountain Morning Hostel & Lodge are provided by other companies.
