For Those Arriving on The Alaska Railroad Train

As you depart the train, look across the Parking Lot. The large building you see is the Visitors Center. You will see a bus stop just to the right and a little closer. There is a free shuttle that departs there about every 20-30 minutes. It is usually green, but can be tan, and is 'school bus' style. It will take you to the Wilderness Access Center "The WAC". This is where you can learn about and purchase your tickets for travel into the park and it is also where those buses will depart. We will then pick you up at 5:30 PM at the very spot they dropped you off.

This free shuttle is called the "Riley Creek Loop" and it goes by the Riley Creek Mercantile on the way to the WAC. They have a selection of groceries, beer and wine there. If you need groceries, take this bus to the Mercantile, get your groceries and get the next bus to the WAC. But make sure you get back to the WAC before 5:30 or you will have to wait for our 9:30 PM shuttle.

If you want to do some hiking there are several trails nearby and both the Visitors Center and the WAC have lockers available to store your luggage. People coming in from Fairbanks find this especially useful.

The morning shuttles will ONLY take you to the WAC or McKinley Village, NOT the Market so plan your grocery purchases accordingly.

REMEMBER, if you are not on the shuttle in time to leave at 5:30 PM, you will be left behind. The same goes for the 9:30 PM shuttle, but missing that one will cause you much bigger problems and expense finding a way to the hostel 14 miles away. Keep this in mind, too, when booking your travel into the Park. Our morning shuttles also MUST LEAVE ON TIME. We will not wait for you and we will not look for you. We have a schedule that other guests are depending on and deserve. It is your one last required responsibility while on vacation!

MORNING SHUTTLES TO THE PARK

Our first shuttle service leaves the hostel daily at 6:35 AM, getting you to the WAC (where all park shuttle buses and tours depart) before 7:00 AM. We also provide a shuttle at 8:20 AM, arriving at the WAC at about 8:40 AM. Stops at McKinley Village are only made if requested.

We have a sign-up board at the hostel office for you to use to sign up for shuttle use other than your original pick-up.

This means that you shouldn't make reservations for the Park Shuttles departing before 7:00 AM or returning after 9:00 PM unless you have your own vehicle.

THERE IS NO EASY WAY FOR YOU TO RETURN TO THE HOSTEL FROM THE PARK AFTER 9:30 PM UNLESS YOU FIND A RIDE WITH SOMEONE, HITCHHIKE, PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE TAXI OR SHUTTLE (WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE). OR WALK THE 14 MILES.

Remember, be at the right place at the right time, we won't go looking for you.

For Those Arriving on The Park Connection Bus

If you are on their 3:00 PM departure from Anchorage, ask The Park Connection Bus to drop you off at McKinley Village. McKinley Village is located about half-way between the hostel and the Park entrance. We will pick you up at the very same spot they drop you off on our way back from the Park at about 9:40 PM. Unfortunately you will not have a chance to buy groceries this night and should do so in Anchorage. You will have opportunities to shop for groceries during the remaining days of your stay.

If you have scheduled coming to Denali on the Park Connection Express Bus leaving Anchorage in the morning, ask them drop you off at the train station. At the same spot they drop you off, there is a free shuttle that departs there about every 20-30 minutes. It is usually green, but can be tan, and is 'school bus' style. It is called the "Riley Creek Loop" and it will take you to the Wilderness Access Center, the "WAC". This is where you can learn about and purchase your tickets for travel into the park and it is also where those buses depart. We will then pick you up at 5:30 PM at the WAC at the very spot the Loop Bus dropped you off.

The Riley Creek Loop goes by the Riley Creek Mercantile before arriving at the WAC.. They have a selection of groceries, beer and wine there. If you need groceries, take this bus to the Mercantile, get your groceries and get the next bus to the Wilderness Access Center. But make sure you get back to the WAC before 5:30.

For Those Arriving on The Alaska-Yukon Trails Bus

The Alaska-Yukon Bus will drop you off at the Wilderness Access Center (The 'WAC'). We will pick you up at the very same place they drop you off at 5:30 PM. While waiting you can learn a lot about the park and buy your tickets for buses into the park. The buses into the park also depart from there.

If you want to go hiking while you wait, there are several trails there and there are lockers where you can store your things. Another thing you can do is take the "Riley Creek Loop" free shuttle, again from the same spot you were dropped off at the WAC by Alaska Yukon, to the Riley Creek Mercantile. The shuttle runs about every 20-30 minutes. At the Mercantile. you will find a grocery selection and beer and wine. Just make sure you are back at our pickup location before 5:30 PM.

The morning shuttles will ONLY take you to the WAC or McKinley Village, NOT the Market so plan your grocery purchases accordingly.
